The start of the 6th edition of the Balexert 20km of Geneva took place this Sunday, November 5 morning on the Quai du Mont Blanc in Geneva. 6,013 participants then came together, encouraged and supported to achieve this wonderful autumn challenge together. The runners had the pleasure of (re)discovering international Geneva from the Right Bank of the Lake. The route then passed in front of the UN as well as through the beautiful Geneva countryside.
The victories of Brian Kipchumba among the men and Helen Bekele among the women left their mark on the 20km distance. Indeed, Brian Kipchumba was able to win in 1h01mn19s. On the women's side, the princess of the Stade de Genève, Helen Bekele thrilled the spectators by winning for the 3rd time in a row in a race that she particularly likes. This Sunday in Geneva, it was also possible to observe the admirable race of Tadesse Abraham (3rd), Swiss marathon record holder who broke the world record in his category on September 24. The record for the 10km format of the event was beaten by Wondimu Bussy who ran a magnificent race as he crossed the finish line in 31mn11s. Among the women, it was Sabella Tesfaye who took the first step of the podium (victory in 37mn58s).

This year, the Mascot race was the big news. A first in Switzerland which brought together 5 mascots. Famous regional organizations and companies took part. It’s Gégé, the official mascot of the event, who makes his mark at home for the pleasure of young and old alike, enjoying a moment of entertainment between two races.

Geneva was beautifully colored this Sunday morning since 388 Walkers were dressed in pink to show their support for the fight against breast cancer. More than 7,000 CHF of donations were also collected and donated to the Breast Cancer Network which led a campaign to raise awareness of the disease.
The director of the event, Benjamin Chandelier, addresses his thanks to the various partners and actors of the event: “I warmly thank the competent authorities and administrations of the City and Canton of Geneva, the municipalities crossed by the route (Pregny- Chambésy, Le Grand-Saconnex, Bellevue and Genthod) as well as our partners, more particularly Balexert, for the trust and support they give us every year. I would also like to highlight the help of the 300 wonderful volunteers who ensure the smooth running of the event. A huge thank you to them.”
He adds: “I congratulate all the participants for the spectacle they gave us as part of this magnificent autumn challenge.”
Ivan Haralambof, director of Balexert, also speaks: “Balexert is proud to support for the 2nd consecutive year this major sporting event on the right bank. We share the same values of conviviality, perseverance and commitment. We are pleased to be committed over the long term to support the promising development experienced by this highlight of autumn in the Geneva region.
